Tribute to Princess

This doggy particularly looks like my darling Princess. I got her for a birthday, I can't remember which one. She came in a cardboard box which my dad left just outside the door one sunny Saturday afternoon. My nosy sister immediately wanted to go look but my mum stopped her and made me leave my storybook and go bring the box in. And lo behold, I almost fell over, cos there was the cutest puppy lying in there! I remember her trembling at first and hiding underneath the couch (my sis was standing on the chair!) but slowly we managed to coax her out. Princess, naturally, was her name and she was the most intelligent and loving doggy. I swear she'd look annoyingly at my sister when she used to walk up and down in front of the tv while we were watching. She'd just stare at my parents when we were scolded and she immediately went and sat by the person who was on the receiving end. And when my mum called us Darling to help with something in the kitchen, Princess would be the first to get there! And yes, she was a darling. She was so patient, I've got pictures of me putting her on my tricycle and trying to make her ride it with a big grin on our faces. In fact the scratch I received during the sole introduction of Princess to a stray cat (I wanted them to be friends) was from, you guessed it, the stupid cat! On windy days she'd run around the compound her snow white fur flying and she certainly knew how to entertain the crowd of Malay mummies and babies who would gather outside our gate every evening to watch her.

But one day, just 3 years after she'd come to be part of the family Princess was puppy-napped. We let her out of the house into the garden one morning, as we usually did, while the family got ready for school and work. Just before I left though, I realised Princess was missing and I became anxious. I stayed home that day with mum and we walked all over the area looking for her, asking people if they'd seen her. And when we didn't find her, that night, I cried and cried. We did the same the next day too and the day after that looking for her in different parts of the neighbourhood. It was on the third day, a Chinese lady staying some blocks away told us that her 2 puppies had been missing from the same day as Princess. Mum finally went back to work and I think I stayed at home a few more days before going back to school. I mourned for ages and a new puppy didn't help cheer me up either. Prince was jet-black and beautiful but mischevious and always getting himself in scraps. I guess none of us bonded with him as much as we did with Princess, perhaps the sense of loss was still too raw. After just a short while, we gave him away and he's now the taiko dog in his new neighbourhood and has the scars to prove it! I still miss her and wonder what happened to her and what it would have been like to have her still running around after all these years. A dog is too much trouble right now but who knows, Princess II might be around the corner, waiting for me to find her.
